BioMed Realty Trust is one of the nation’s leading providers of world-class real estate to the Life Science Industry® with over $3.5 billion invested in state-of-the-art research facilities.

The Center for Life Science Boston (CLSB) project is a new model for development of research space in the Longwood Medical Area, in Boston, MA. This 21-story research facility, with six levels of below grade parking, is Gold LEED certified and is located in the most concentrated research space area in the nation being intimately surrounded by Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, the Merck Research Building, the Karp Family Research Center, and the Harvard School of Medicine.  Sanborn Head was responsible for the geotechnical design— including Geotechnical in Situ Specialty testing (GIST) using Drilling Parameter Recorder (DPR), environmental due diligence and remediation, construction oversight, and Massachusetts Contingency Plan regulatory closure for the project. In order for the project to be feasible, foundations needed to be developed to support column loads on the order of 6,000 to 10,000 kips.  With the use of DPR, Sanborn Head designed 8 and 10-foot diameter slurry caissons to a depth below the ground surface of up to 130 feet to meet this challenge. These were the largest caissons used for a building in Boston at the time of construction. By working collaboratively with the project team to address both design and construction issues effectively, the project, which was built using the up-down construction method, was completed on time and under budget.
