With over 1,700 Lowe’s Home Centers across North America, Lowe’s has been a leader in providing home improvement materials and services while focusing on environmentally responsible development.  Sanborn Head has been fortunate to be a trusted partner with Lowe’s Home Centers on many challenging projects throughout New England and the Midwest.

As part of the South Burlington, Vermont project, Sanborn Head provided geotechnical engineering solutions for the construction of a retail building with a footprint of about 150,500 square feet and up to 20 feet of raise-in-grade fill that were placed over soft, sensitive glacial clay deposits. The foundation solution consisted of a ground improvement method to stiffen the soft clay and reduce differential settlement across the building. The soft clay was stiffened by installation of approximately 4,100 controlled modulus columns (CMCs) that were drilled and cast-in-place. Sanborn Head provided engineering and quality control services during the installation of the CMCs and earthwork construction. Sanborn Head also provided environmental due diligence services for the real estate property transaction, plus geotechnical in-situ specialty testing and slope stability analyses to support the expansion of an on-site storm water detention basin, and stormwater infiltration testing services.
