The Blackburn & Union Privileges Superfund Site, located on South Street in Walpole, MA, is a Superfund Site and listed on the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) National Priority List (NPL). As a trusted advisor to our client, Sanborn Head’s services at this site spanned 10 years and included completing an extensive Remedial Investigation, developing a Feasibility Study, supporting negotiations for the Scope of Work and Consent Decree, and communicating and building relationships with the community on behalf our of client.

The 22-acre site had a history of various industrial activities spanning several hundred years, resulting in impacts to soil, groundwater, sediment, and surface water.  Notably, site investigations and analysis were complicated by elevated pH (up to pH 14) groundwater.  Sanborn Head developed specialized sampling and sample preparation techniques to meet the project Data Quality Objectives.  Our investigations included completion of soil borings; installation of multi-level monitoring wells; and sampling of soil, groundwater, sediment, surface water, and soil vapor.  We developed and maintained a relational database with over 100,000 data elements to support analysis efforts.

Sanborn Head also provided Feasibility Study services, including conceptual designs, evaluation and recommendations of remedial alternatives, and engineer’s opinion of costs.
