Sanborn Head along with other contributing consultants are the 2019 Gold Award winners of the American Council of Engineering Companies of Massachusetts (ACEC/MA) Engineering Excellence Awards Competition for the MGM Springfield project in Springfield, MA. The project is the largest private development in the history of western Massachusetts with a value of over $960 M.
The award was presented to the team of engineers that transformed over 30 individual properties into a vibrant redevelopment. The team of consulting engineers included Sanborn Head (environmental and geotechnical), TEC, Inc. (transportation), Allen & Major Associates, Inc. (civil), and Desimone Consulting Engineers (structural). The team was recognized for outstanding professional design excellence on March 20 during a ceremony at the Royal Sonesta in Cambridge, MA.
Sanborn Head performed the environmental and geotechnical engineering for MGM Springfield and used specialized soil testing to support an economical foundation system, and integrated complex historic structures and facades. As both the Licensed Site Professional of record and geotechnical engineer of record for this project, Sanborn Head was able to integrate the soil and groundwater management approach with the geotechnical design to provide the most effective approach that balanced project costs, schedule and regulatory compliance that protects human health, public welfare and the environment.
In a highly-regulated environment, the MGM Springfield project moved smoothly from initial due diligence to grand opening, and provides over 3,000 new jobs to the region.
